On Feb. 20, 2003, Shin Young Metal announced plans to build a $110 million plant on U.S. 331 two miles north of Luverne, a site 39 miles from Hyundai's facility in south Montgomery. SMART became the county's largest employer and is making body parts for the vehicles built at the Montgomery plant

SMART Alabama is owned by Shin Young and by Hyundai Motor America, Inc.through a holding company, Stamped Metal American Research Technology, Inc. (SMART). Hyundai Motor America, Inc. is wholly-owned by Hyundai Motor Company in Korea

Hyundai Motor has completed a $1.1 billion automobile manufacturing plant in Montgomery, Alabama. The $1.1 billion plant is the company's first U.S. manufacturing facility. The plant employs more than 2,700 team members with high-paying jobs and full benefits. Additionally, more than 72 suppliers have located businesses throughout North America to support Hyundai's new plant. SMART Alabama is Hyundai's principal body frame supplier and other metal parts. SMART currently employs about 700 US workers.

We have recently completed an expansion to accommodate our

CMA – SUV with physical plant expansion and installation of CMA

assembly equipment. We are also completing installation of our new blanker line.

The 500,000 square-foot manufacturing plant resides on 100 acres of land and includes a stamping facility, a NF and CM assembly facility and an administration and producution office. SMART has the capacity to produce 285,000 vehicle parts per year.

Part of our plan for a long time has been to bring our kids back to the county" Crenshaw County Commissioner said " That's what we mean to do. Previously, when our kids graduated from a prominent university they have to seek employment in other counties. We not only lose the people, but we also lose the money they'are making."

SMART is the big fish.
